The drum chip resets the HP photoconductor imaging drum unit. This allows you to re-use it for another lifetime.

Its compatible with these models. 

The print quality is usually still good when the drum reaches the end of its rated page life. The drum unit locks out when the page limit is reached. This chip will extend the life of the Photoconductor Unit provided it is working properly in other respects.

The chip fits in place of the original one held with a screw, plugged into ribbon cable (not included).  No specific instructions sent.  You should empty the waste toner.
